To earn a teaching credential in California, it is necessary to verify subject matter competency in one of the following ways:
Pass the appropriate subject matter examination approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC)
Complete a CCTC-approved subject matter program, major, or its equivalent or graduate degree in each core subject area.
