The Child Welfare and Attendance (CWA) unit within the Orange County Department of Education's Alternative, Community, and Correctional Education Schools and Services (ACCESS) division is dedicated to promoting student success by addressing attendance and other challenges that impede regular school attendance. Our mission is to ensure that all students have access to a supportive and effective educational environment.

Our Key Services Include:
  • Providing Attendance Support: Collaborating with students, families, and schools to identify and overcome barriers to regular attendance, ensuring compliance with California's compulsory education laws.
  • Providing Resources to Interventions: Our team provides resources to counseling and other services, implementing strategies to address various challenges, and help with fostering a positive school climate to enhance student engagement.
  • Re-engagement Processes: We coordinate efforts with site staff to support Home Visits, hold necessary meetings of support, engage using other communication modalities to help families and students know the importance of attendance and the support that we will provide in helping students.
  •  Alternative Education using Online Referral System: Through ACCESS, we offer an online referral system for our partner districts to support helping students and families find academic placements to meet their individual needs.
Our holistic approach ensures that each student receives personalized support tailored to their unique needs, promoting academic achievement and personal growth.
