2013 Energy Invitational

Pacifica High School in Garden Grove wins the 2013 Energy Invitational!

Technology students from Pacifica High School in Garden Grove can boast of their prowess in squeezing maximum mileage from an allotment of gasoline after winning the 4th Annual UCI Energy Invitational held earlier this month.

Pacifica’s six-member team with its fuel-efficient go-kart won the high school division and the overall competition after beating eight Orange County high schools and engineering teams in the college division representing Cal-State Los Angeles, UC Davis, and UC Irvine. The competition was held May 11 at Adams Motorsports Park in Riverside.

Vehicles entered by the student teams were required to complete as many laps within one hour as possible while consuming just $1 of energy, whether it be from gasoline, electricity, solar, or compressed natural gas. Driven by junior Adam Walsh, the gasoline-powered entry built from scratch by the Pacifica High team completed 60 laps within the prescribed time limit.

Using donated parts, the winning vehicle was constructed by the students over 10 months under the guidance of teachers Eric Scoles and Ed Harris, and was powered by a single-cylinder engine producing a mere six horsepower.

The school’s team, known as “Pacifica Motorsports,” included students Jeremy Lawrence, Ryan Marx, Adam Walsh, John Paul Edwards, Cody Garling, David Todorovich, Cody Blaset, Brandon Halliwell-Taylor, and Trevor Sailors.

2013 RapidTech Design Competition

This year was the 2nd Annual, RapidTechHS 3D Printing Competition.  Students were asked to merge their artistic, engineering and 3D Modeling/CAD skills to produce a model using 3D printing technology.  There were over 30 entries from students in our 3 districts, Santa Ana, Garden Grove and Orange.  The entries were displayed during the Youth Expo, at the Orange County Fairgrounds, and were judged by industry experts on Originality, Technical Merit, Presentation, and Design Brief. All the entries were of an extremely high standard and displayed a high level of skill.

On the subject of 3D printing, according to a new report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. (GIA), the global market for 3D printing is projected to reach US$2.99 billion by the year 2018, driven by the advent of newer technologies, approaches and applications.

Already emerging are printed parts for high-value applications like patient-specific implants for hip joints or teeth, or lighter and stronger aircraft parts. It is expected that in the very near future there will be "desktop" printing of entire final products from wheels to even washing machines.
