Parent Infant Education and Support (PIES)

PIES is a regionalized program for infants with a hearing loss ranging in age from birth to 36 months.  The program is designed to serve children in partnership with their families.  The staff is skilled in various modes of communication and uses a comprehensive approach to develop language based on the needs of the child and family.

A trained teacher of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing works closely with families to provide a language rich environment through home visits, parent education, parent/child playgroups and a center-based program.  A speech and language pathologist, paraeducator, and site administrator provide support to the program.

PIES Vision
The philosophy of P.I.E.S. is to provide early intervention which leads to greater language acquisition in the formative years of development. Studies have shown that the greatest growth in language occurs in children between the ages of 0 and 3 years of age.

Because no single communication methodology works for all children, the P.I.E.S. staff is skilled in various modes of communication and uses a comprehensive approach to developing language based upon the wishes of the family.

PIES Eligibility
Children with a hearing loss between the ages of 0 and 3 years may be eligible for the P.I.E.S. program.

Assessment will be completed when a child is referred to determine the best possible program for your family and child. Additional assessments at the time he or she reaches the age of 2 years 6 months will provide an easy transition to the most appropriate program when he or she turns 3 years old. The team will assist the family in finding a preschool program based upon the child's communication mode, residual hearing, and developmental goals.

P.I.E.S. is a regionalized program operated by the Orange County Department of Education through the cooperation of many school districts and SELPAs.

By pooling expertise and resources with a focus on infants and toddlers, each child and family can create a unique, personalized program designed to meet their goals and needs as they change over time.
