Healthy Students learn better and are more successful in school! The goal of the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) is for all students to succeed. The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) recognizes the importance of health and its relationship to learning; the goal is that our students experience wellness and achieve their greatest potential.
Coordinated school health programs, which include nursing and health services, promote health and wellness. The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) mission is to serve students, schools, parents, and the community to promote optimal health for our schools and community. The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) provides the support our schools need to maintain a healthy environment that fosters learning.
The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) provides countywide leadership in School Health and School Nursing services as well as consultation and direction for the implementation and development of coordinated school health programs.
New Health and Safety Code Law related to Public Health: Vaccinations
On June 30, 2015, Governor Brown signed Senate Bill (SB) 277 into law. This law eliminates new personal belief exemptions and requires that children receive vaccines for certain infectious diseases priot to being admitted to any public or private elementary or secondary school or day care center. The law allows for a child to have a medical exemption when a physician believes the circumstances warrant. Students who had a personal belief exemption prior to January 1, 2016 will be required to be immunized when they enroll in the next grade span. Grade spans are defined as birth to preschool; grades TK/K to 6; and grades 7 to 12. The law does not go into effect until January 1, 2016. This will not change school practices for students entering school this fall. Parents may file a personl belief exemption through December 2015 using the "Personal Beliefts Exemption to Required Immunizations" form that is completed by the parent and a healthcare provider.
