General

Who is eligible to apply?
All public and charter schools in Orange County are eligible to apply.

What is considered an “Impact School”?
An Impact School demonstrates high-quality practices that meaningfully benefit students through well-designed, sustainable programs or initiatives aligned to county priorities.

Is this award based on test scores?
No. While schools may include academic data, the award focuses on innovative, impactful practices and meaningful student outcomes beyond standardized test scores.

Application Process

Who can submit an application?
Applications should be completed and submitted by the school. Schools may apply based on a specific program or initiative.

Can someone nominate our school?
Yes. Schools may be nominated by a colleague, district partner, or community member; however, nominations serve only to express interest or support of a school. The school must complete and submit the official application to be considered.

How long does the application take to complete?
The application is designed to be brief and focused, consisting of four sections that vary in the level of detail required.

What materials are required?
Applicants provide a short narrative, supporting evidence of impact, and basic information about the program or initiative. Optional artifacts such as photos or videos may also be included.

Do I need approval to apply?
Yes. Applicants must confirm that both the principal and district superintendent are aware of the submission.

Selection Process

How are applications evaluated?
Applications are reviewed using an advisory rubric that considers impact on students, equity and access, implementation quality, sustainability, and evidence of results.

Who selects the awardees?
Applications are reviewed by an OCDE cross-division committee, and final awardees are selected by OCDE’s Cabinet.

How many schools are recognized each year?
Each year, a select group of schools is recognized to uphold the distinction and significance of the award.

Validation & Recognition

What is a validation visit?
A validation visit is conducted with selected schools to confirm that the program or initiative described in the application is reflected in practice.

Should schools prepare for the visit?
No formal presentation is required. Visits are designed to be collaborative and minimally disruptive, focusing on observing the work in action.

When are awardees announced?
Awardees are typically announced at the beginning of the following school year after validation visits are completed.

Reapplication & Eligibility

Can a school apply more than once?
Yes. Schools may apply in future years.

Can a previously recognized school apply again?
Yes. Previously recognized schools may reapply; however, the application must highlight a different program or initiative than the one previously recognized.

Additional Information

What happens after a school is recognized?
Awardees receive formal recognition and may be featured in stories, media, and learning opportunities to share their work with others. After being selected, an OCDE cross-disciplinary team will visit Impact Schools during the school year.
