2nd Normandy Institute announced by National History Day!
Albert Small, an esteemed National History Day supporter and owner of a large collection of rare seminal national documents, has once again underwritten a Normandy Institute for 15 teacher-student teams (pairs). This unique opportunity will take place immediately after the NHD contest in June, 2013.
Selected teams will engage in a rigorous study of D-Day. Students and teachers will attend lectures presented by leading World War II historians, participate in a scholarly study of the World War II monuments in the D.C. area, and walk in the footsteps of history on the beaches of Normandy. The last day in Normandy will be a day of remembrance. The students will lay a wreath at the American Cemetery based on the pre-institute research of a soldier who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Last year the team from San Diego, Carson Scott and and his teacher Cherie Redelings, were chosen to particpate. They reported it was truly an experience of a lifetime! Dates: June 16-28, 2012. Locations: Washington, DC area and Normandy, FranceParticipants: 15 teams of teachers and their students selected through an application process described in greater detail on the Normandy Institute page on the National History Day - Normandy Institute website.
A Few Details: Teachers will room with other teachers; students will room with other students. All participants are responsible for procuring their own passports.
Institute-related travel and lodging expenses do not include travel to and from Baltimore, Maryland – the beginning point of the institute.

Lowell Milken Center Discovery Award – win $10,000!
Students could win $10,000 with their NHD projects this year! The Lowell Milken Center, a strong supporter of the NHD program offers an annual competition in which NHD students across the country submit their projects for consideration in the Center’s Discovery Award. Details include: Grades 6 – 12 projects in the following categories: Performance, Exhibit, Documentary, and Web site. Projects must emphasize UNSUNG HEROES IN HISTORY.
Students interested in submitting their entries for consideration must submit an Intent to Enter by 2/1/2013. Entries must be received by 6/1/2013.
Winners will be announced by 7/1/2013. The First Place winning entry will receive $10,000 along with special recognition. The Second Place entry will receive $3000 and special mention on the Center website. The Third Place entry will receive $1000 and special mention on the Center website.
