NHD-OC will take place on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at the Orange County Department of Education!
Experienced NHD-OC teachers and students can prepare for the upcoming year’s program and competition by reviewing this year’s key dates, training and learning opportunities, sample projects, theme and topic information, and contest registration details.
Completion of the survey does not obligate you to particiapte in NHD-OC. Registered teachers/coaches will receive all pertinent materials and information updates as they occur.
Remember, the number of entries per category per school is:
□ Elementary School = 3 entries per category
□ Middle School = 3 entries per category
□ High School = 5 entries per category
We strongly recommend limiting the number of students participating in any one category to no more than 50% of the total number of participants from your school.

NHD Annual Calendar
Orange County is tied to the national program. Our calendar provides opportunities for students, parents, community members, and teachers to prepare both for school-level implementation and participation in the competition.

Theme and Topic Information
The National History Day organization establishes an annual theme each year. Students may begin to work on projects as soon as the National Finals competition ends in mid-June. Student entries may address any local, state, county, international, or global topic of interest that connects with the annual theme. The theme is purposely broad so that nearly any topic will work.

We encourage students to select topics of high interest as they will be “married” to this project for many months. Topics and the projects connected to them must be appropriate for fellow students and parents to view. The following list provides California History-Social Standards aligned topic possibilities as a springboard for generating your own ideas. Remember to fine-tune topics and make them as specific as possible.
Teacher Training Events
OCDE strives to support new, considering, and experienced NHD teachers with professional learning opportunities including a program orientation for new teachers and those considering NHD. This year's orientation will be held on Wednesday, Ocober 17, 2012 from 4:00pm-6:00pm. There are also other trainings early in the year to get you off to a good start.
