The Orange County Department of Education is dedicated to ensuring that all students are equipped with the competencies they need to thrive in the 21st century and beyond. Included in the educational options are high-quality charter schools that emphasize rigorous academic standards, innovative programs and responsible business practices.
The Orange County Department of Education Charter Schools Unit accepts charter petitions and revocation appeals on behalf of the Orange County Board of Education and is responsible for facilitating the petition review and appeal process. The Charter Schools Unit coordinates the monitoring and oversight of charter schools authorized by the Orange County Board of Education and provides general information and technical assistance to school district authorizers and charter schools.
During times of restricted public access to the Orange County Department of Education offices, and in observance of social distancing requirements, the following modifications to charter school petition submissions, appeals, renewals and material revision will be observed.
An appointment will be necessary to submit any materials to the Charter Schools Unit. Appointments are scheduled during regular business hours 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call (714) 966-4381 to schedule an appointment.
To comply with social distancing requirements, meetings with Charter Schools Unit Staff will be conducted via teleconference. Call (714) 966-4381 to schedule an appointment. Individuals with disabilities in need of reasonable modification or accommodation consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) may request assistance by contacting the Charter Schools Unit at (714) 966-4381.
The Orange County Board of Education continues to hold board meetings and charter school petitioners will continue to be provided time during public hearings to address the Board in person, space permitting, or via teleconference. Members of the public will be permitted to attend board meetings in person, but due to social distancing requirements, there may be limited seating. Once the meeting room is at capacity, no additional persons will be admitted. Instructions for observing the meeting and making public comments via teleconference are delineated on each board meeting agenda.
